I have an older Gas powered Lincoln stick welder. I am not getting power through the leads or the 120 volt plugs. When I drag the stick accross metal all I get is very small sparks. Any ideas as to what is wrong and how to repair it??

Dan, I have a gas lincoln 200 too, after sitting for a year I had the same symptoms, polished the commutator and found the brushes sticking when I was cleaning. It fixed mine.

Hi Dan from Fred
I agree with Al and Jim from the rock pile on this one. The rheostat can be polished up with crocus cloth (on the inside of welder), sometimes it will help to run 'er back and forth several times, I've seen that get one going. If you don't have a commutator stick, take a piece of wood and fold some wet and dry or emery cloth over it, crank up the engine and polish the commutator (copper segmented part if you don't know what it is). Be careful in there, it only takes 30 volts to kill you. While you're at it, that housing you took off to get in there, look inside if and see if it has slung any solder onto it. If it has, use it kinda light duty till you can replace the rig. Costs more than the welders worth to repair that. Fred from the Mung Factory

I had an old Miller that did the same thing as you describe. It turned out to be the fine adjust rheostat as Jim explained.

Check fine adjustment rheostat. They burn up frequently while using a.c. power and not being set on high setting.

If it's a old DC welder with an exciter armature on the end of the main gen.The commutator surface
could be dirty,an electric supply huse sells athing called a Com stick which is a abrasive stick that you rub on the commutator while the welder is running, usually restoring the welding current.

Check ALL Connections, including cables, clamps, and connections inside the panel. The brushes on the generator may be worn out,and/or the commutator may be dirty. Have a safe and happy holiday. JIM
