Two stage air compressor

I'm getting ready to buy an air compressor for my shop. I've had a 6hp single stage 60gal vertical unit in the past with good results. I'm considering a 5hp two stage 60gal vertical model now. It's $750 vs the $400 price of the other unit. The single stage unit made lots of noise. I've read that the two stage models are much quiter, partly because they run much slower. I notice the two stage model puts out much more CFM at 90psi than the single stage, on less horsepower, so it must be more efficient. Any comments on my observations? Is this true about the noise reduction? The archives provided some information, but not enough. -Thanks.

Jeff, try www.tiptools.com check what they have. I bought a quincy 5hp 2 stage 60 gal. works great, and the price was right. luck.

A 2 stage compressor is MORE efficient because the air is cooled between stages. Mechanical energy is not wasted as heat as it is in a single stage. As for the higher CFM ratings, there is really no such thing as a 6hp compressor. There is a lot of lying going on in this segment of the market. Get the data off of the motor. 1hp = 750 watts. Watts= volts x amps. I bet it doesn't add up to 6hp. Probably more like 3.5 or so. A rule of thumb, a reputable compressor maker will NEVER claim more than 4cfm per electric motor horsepower. That is a simple fact of physics. I bet the more expensive compressor is simply claiming its output closer to reality than the old one. Beware. Even quality companies like Quincy and IR are being forced to build overstressed units to compete with the junk on the market. One 5hp IR I saw recently was turning 1450 rpm, and it was a good cast iron unit, but a 3hp turning to produce 5hp worth of air. It is almost impossible to turn a true 5hp motor on a household electrical service. Finally, disregard all cfm ratings below 90-100 psi. Who cares how much cfm you get at 40 psi, what do you run at such a low pressure?

is there a way of turning a single stage compressor into a two stage via machining and modification of head spacing and adding a second smaller piston head to the existing piston, or will the smaller piston head need to advance more than the larger primary piston via stroke motion

The two stage is more efficient because it compresses the same air twice. Its not just two cylinders pumping air, its compressed in one cylinder then pumped to the second cylinder and compressed further before it goes into the tank.

Don't discount the little fact you threw in about it running slower. Thats a big factor in how long the thing's gonna last. You can just imagine an aluminum cylinder turning 2 or 3 thousand rpm, as compared to a cast iron cylinder running at 6 or 8 hundred rpm. The slower unit will last years longer.

EVERYTHING BEING THE SAME (HP,RPM,ETC.)A 2 STAGE IS NOT MORE EFFICIENT,BUT MORE POWERFUL.MAX ON 2 STAGE 175+PSIG....MAX ON SINGLE STAGE 125 PSIG.TWO STAGE ARE RUN SLOWER(SMALLER DRIVE PULLEY) DUE TO HIGHER PRESSURE,THIS MAKES FOR USE OF A LOWER HP MOTOR.THIS IS WHERE BETTER EFFICIENCY COMES TO PLAY.HIGH PRESSURE IN SAME SIZE TANK AS SINGLE STAGE WILL GIVE HIGHER CFM TOO. BUT SINGLE STAGE 2 CYLINDER WILL PUMP UP FASTER TO IT'S LIMIT(125).IF YOU WANT MORE CFM BUT SAME PRESSURE(125 MAX) THEN GO WITH A 4 CYLINDER SINGLE STAGE.IN 2-STAGE COMPRESSORS---1 CYLINDER PUMPS INTO SMALLER CYLINDER THAT PUMPS THE PRESSURE HIGHER THEN TO THE TANK..IN SINGLE STAGE COMPRESSOR BOTH CYLINDERS SAME SIZE;BOTH PUMP INTO TANK AT SAME TIME..... THEY ALSO MAKE 4 CYLINDER 2 STAGE COMPRESSORS TOO BUT THEY ARE UPWARDS OF 3 GRAND OR MORE.

I have a Ingersol-Rand 2 stage, vertical. It's quiter than any small portable i've seen. Check out their web site@ www.ingersolrand.com. They helped me set-up my system online. It's an awesome
