What the best tool to bull bushings from a casting when you can't get to the back side to drive them out? For example, the shaft the front axle on my Super A pivots on has a bushing on each end of the tube and I can't drive it out from the oppisite end? Thanks.

If bushing is bronze i sometimes use bushing cutter that runs in air hammer, I bought it from snap on. Steel, weld inside and let cool.

I have mig welded a nut to a flat washer that's welded to the i.d. of the bushing, then thread the slide hammer to this ,pound it out. AL

Daniel, I know exactly what you are talking about on your SA, the front axle pivot bushing. I would suggest try a "sharp" cold chisel and see if you can get a start on it, and hopefully end up prying it out. The bushing I believe is made out of brass, so it should not be to hard to chisel.

I have removed bushings using all these tricks but if I can get a good grip with a slidehammer gear puller that is my tool of choice.

Hi Daniel,
An old machine shop trick is to weld around the ID of the bushing to shrink it. It will just fall out after that.

I like the method The Red Ed uses with the tap. Good idea. Another method for a blind bore is to pack the bushing full of grease, find a punch or bolt the same diameter as the bore of the bushing and insert in to bore, and tap with a large hammer. This will hydraulically push the bushing out. Good Luck

Daniel, Locate an appropriate tap, and tap away. When the tap reaches the bottom of the bore, the threading action will jack the bushing out. Works real good for me on pilot shaft bushings !! Ed

burn a slot in bushing with acetalyne torch and pry it out. Casting shouldn't be affected.

How about just splitting the bushing ? Find the thinnest area of the bushing and drive a sharp punch between the bushing and axle bore. As it bows inward it will collapse from the bore and come loose.
