I have a IH 300 ser#15202 (a '55 model I think) that has the TA out. The clutch does not fully disengage and I end up yankin' the tar out of the shift lever. very frustrating. I was told by the local repair shop that if I was to replace the TA assembly ($425 labor inc. if I split tractor and just bring in TA unit, not sure if new parts or rebuilt) that as long as I maintain clean oil (change every 2-3 years or when dirty) that the TA should last my lifetime. I do not use the tractor for real pulling just for general use around the small farm (snowplowing, hauling wood, etc) Can anyone tell me if the repair shops theory is true. I think the price is right, but any feedback is welcome.

The estimate is probably for rebuilt components, and is certainly reasonable enough. Before you spend that amount, adjust the external clutch & TA linkage PROPERLY. Your symptoms COULD be simple mal-adjustment caused by adjusting the main clutch freeplay a couple of times without doing the TA linkage.

The TA in my dad's Farmall 400 was running strong when he quit farming around 1980, and that tractor was used regularly every year since it was new, pulling harrows, drills, swather, baler, etc. We always had a larger tractor for our heavy tillage, though. I think the International TA has gotten a bit of a bum rap, since they often don't last 40 years in daily service. But keep them maintained and yes, it should outlast you.
