I have an International B-414 diesel tractor. The glow plugs did not work when I bought it so I bought 4 new plugs. I have 12volts going to all four plugs. I am not sure of the wiring. It seems that the last plug previously went positive to ground on the block. This baffling. They do not heat up. I have the manuals but the info is vague. Can someone help me on this. Paul

I just bought a B-414, and will be working on the electrical this winter also (including glow plugs). Remember that this tractor is POSITIVE GROUND. So your 12 volts will come from the ground side. Also, there should be an indicator that glows when ready on the dash. This is a RESISTOR. If this resistor is not there, you will burn out the glow plugs right away. If it is broken, you will not get any power through the system. Also, the glow plugs run in series (the power goes from the first to the next, and on and on to form the circuit), so if even one is bad, none will work. Try removing each one and testing for continuity and resistance with a multimeter so you dont risk burning them out.

Glow plugs are wired in parrallel, and a bad one will not affect the others. To test, remove all power leads from the plugs, clamp the ground clamp of a test light to the HOT post of your battery and touch the probe to the wiring post of each glowplug. If it lights, the plug is OK. Some indicator resistors are in series with the plugs, others are in parallel. Those in series will, when failed, prevent plug operation. I can't say anything specific about your system.

Did you test the glow plugs? Put power to them (from a battery or a charger) and see if they heat up. If not, they are bad. If they do, check to make sure you have 12v at the wires and a good ground. Check the ground connection from the battery to the block. Glow plugs are pretty simple, so these steps should solve your problem.

We have the same glowplug system on a 434 and when it is not working the problem has bean the wires not having a good conection. they are bare steel wire so they rust and oxidze after a bit. After cleaning the ends it works ok again. hope this helps your 414.
