Does anyone have any experience with one of those "trash can" type propane heaters?
What I want to do is heat locally (like when I'm working) in the barn, where my table saw, etc is. The area is completely open - all I want to do is heat near me and the tool or thing I'm working on - otherwise, it's a big open area.
How long will one of the small propane tanks last?

isolate your space with plastic sheet walls
and vented heater, propane has a lot of water vapor byproduct that may cause your cold equipment
to sweat and rust.give it some thought before you
jump, good luck.

No experience with "trash can" heaters. For what you described I would get one of those radiant heaters that mount to the top of a common 20 lb (bar-b-que) tank. I can heat my cabin with one for a weekend on one tank - about $7-8.
