Dipstick oil heaters

I've thought about using one of the dipstick oil heaters to keep the tranny/differential oil in my 333 Massey a bit thinner when temperatures reach 30 below or so (and that's cold let me tell you). It must be hell on the old bus. Anyways, some of the local aftermarket suppliers say that they are not made anymore, since they started fires. Now, somehow I doubt that (I reminded him that I wasn't putting it in the gas tank). I could drop it in through one of the bolt holes that secures the top plate on the tranny (and hope to remember to remove the dipstick before cranking it over of course). Has anyone ever done this? Do you think it would work? Do they still make those things? How do the magnetic external heaters work? Let me know anything you think might help. Thanks

don't wast your time with the dipstick heater. thay work in 5 qts. of motor oil poorly (my opinion) and if you forget to unplug it before you pull it out it burns out the element. the magnet heaters work pretty good if you have a flat spot to put it. i have also used a drain plug heater made by zero-start. but thay have 1" pipe thread and you have to have the clearance in your trans. for the element. good luck.

I doubt if a dipstick heater will do much good in gallons of heavy trans.lube inside a big chunk of cold cast iron. Why not change to light wieght trans-hyd oil?

I've never seen a dipstick heater, but I've had good luck with the magnetic type. I usually put one on the bottom of the oil pan and leave it on overnight.

I can't tell you a lot about the application and whether it will do what your asking, but I can tell you that they are still available. You can get them through NAPA.
