I have a secondhand torch outfit. It doesn't have the arrestors. My question is are they really that important to have for safety or can I do without and still be safe?

There was a worker killed over in Charlotte, NC a couple of years ago that didn't have them on his cutting rig. He ran out of oxygen and went to get another bottle without shutting everything down correctly so that acetylene flowed back through the lines and accumulated in the O2 regulator. When he changed his bottle and cut the O2 on, the resulting explosion buried the t-handle from the regulator in his chest...killing him. The price for backfire arrestors/check valves is a small one to go home at night.
Y'all stay safe!

I teach torch safety classes to factory maintenance crews. If I had you set in on one, you wouldn't light that torch without the proper safety measures. We sell check valve sets for $22.75US. You can also install quick disconnects with built-in check valves for $38.00US. Cheap insurance. The check valve stops the explosive mixture in the torch handle from entering the hoses in the event of a backfire. You 'will' have lots of pops and backfires over time. Also, be aware that check valves don't stop flame. They only stop gas. I have check valves at the torch handle fittings and flame busters at the tanks. Flame busters cost $37.55 each. One for the O2 and one for the C2H2 fitting. Please, doesn't matter where you get them. Just get them.

How do I tell if I have arrestors or not? I have a Victor Journeyman set I bought about 14 years ago and only use for cutting once in a great while.

I'm considering buying the Victor( small set with small bottles). Does this set have check valves? Any information, pro or con, about this set will be appreciated.

Hello Robert in Alabama,
Nearly all of Victors new torch sets have built in check valves. They have had for a few years now. We also have a Victor torch called the Vangaurd series that has check valves and flash arrestors built-in to the handle. The Vangaurd option is available in many of the torch outfits Victor makes. Vangaurd is not available in the light duty 'Performer ' series or the 'Medalist'series. Prices range from $223.70US on the light duty basic kit (std. Medalist) to $892.00US for the Journeyman Vangaurd with all the whistles and bells. Be sure you match your acetylene tanks to
your largest tip. You can't safely draw more than 1/7 the capacity per hour from the C2H2 tank without drawing off acetone.

Hello Shoe,
If you have a Victor torch outfit from fairly recent vintage, it will have check valves built into the handle. If you look in the fitting end of the handle where the hoses screw on you will see what appears to be a flat metal plate or disk. If it's just a blank hole you don't have them. The type that is retro fitted will be found in one or two places as described; screwed on to the handle, just between the hose and handle or up on the regulator, between the hose and regulator. I've seen them in both places. I like to see that. They look like a small brass fitting shaped like a six or eight sided nut. You will notice an arrow stamped into the check valve that indicates direction of gas flow. The arrow will (or should) be pointing towards the torch. If you see any other attachment in these locations, you may have flame busters or flash arrestors. Those will be about four inches long and very noticable.

The Journeyman series with built-in reverse flow check valves has a 315C on the torch handle, "C" for check valve. If the hoses are removed from the handle you can see the check valves to verify. The Victor "Pigtail Flashback Arrestor" for Acetylene looks like a straight brass pipe coupler with a hex for a wrench on each end, and will probably have "Flash Arrestor" written on it. Another safety related point is to always back out pressure regulator when changing tanks, some say every time you shut down the tank valves. Also don't stand in front of the regulator adjuster handle when opening tank valve.

Boy! This was a HOT subject! But I did learn things. My torch is the 'Journeyman' model and it does have the check valves at the regulators and the torch handle is a 315C. So I'm all set. Thanks guys.
