I am trying to set up an old belt drive alternator for a little backup power this winter. I got it years ago for free, but I'm not sure it's all there. It has 2 wires coming from the brushes which appear to be the a/c outputs. The field coils have one isolated lug and the other grounded to the case. When I apply 12vdc to the isolated lug, I get 110-120vac across the output wires by setting the throttle speed. So far so good! There are 2 "L" shaped brackets welded to the case next to the output wires. Was this simply an outlet box, or am I missing some additional regulating device? If anyone has any experience with Handley alternators, or any similar D/C excited alternators, could you tell me if there is anything else I need.
