Rusted Cylinders- fixable?

I have an old front end loader for a tractor I want to put back into use. The problem is, the loader was stored with the cylinders extended out of the sleeves and they have a layer of rust on the outside. They smoothed out pretty good with a stiff wire brush on a grinder, however the still are very slightly pitted. They slick up pretty good with oil on them. Would they still work without leaking or wearing out the seals? Thanks.

What`s the worst that could happen if you try to use them? That`s right, they might need a rebuild. Chances are that your seals are dried out from non-use anyway, or that you have an acceptable level of leakage. In my area(central new york st), the rods can either be re-plated if not too badly pitted, or new rods can be made for your cylinders by a full service hydraulic shop.Try to find out where the tractor repair shops go when they need work done. Just like anything else, you will find a wide range of prices for the same end product.
