9N Hydraulic problems

I have a 9N (or 2N, Illegible Serial Number) that sat still for 3 months, no bushhogging needed during the drought. Now the lift doesn't work at all. The fluid looks a little milky so I'm going to replace that first. When I removed the pump plug, about 5 or 6 oz. of foam ran out, I'm sure this is not a good thing. Any suggestions on priming the pump would be greatly appreciated as well as any troubleshooting tips.

I live in upstate South Carolina, email me a phone number and I promise not to be a pest.

I want to thank everyone who responded to my post, and humbly apologize for posting on the wrong message board. I posted here before I found the N-Board. (thanks Robert).

As it turns out it was the control valve stuck. I had about 1 inch of water in the trans/rear end housing. Replaced the fluid, operated the control valve by hand and went back to tractoring.

I'll be on the N-Board. (and here) Thanks for the offer for the service manual section but if anyone could recommend what they consider the best, let me know. I'll be happy to purchase my own copy.

thanx again,
jg

Jimmy, I think the I&T manual is the rught one. Check the manuals bar to the left margin of these pages. YTM has a good library of manuals for the oldies.
Jerry had already diagnosed your problem before me. see ya on the radio

The foam is normal. The pump shouldn't require any special priming, just crank the tractor and leave it idle, tranny in neutral, with the clutch out. Sounds like the check valve has stuck on the hydraulics. No big problem mine does it every spring. This is a frequent problem on the older Fords. If you don't already have a service manual on the tractor, if you will email me a fax # I will be glad to send you a copy to service the lift. Good luck-Jerry

Jimmy, go to the Ford N Board and post your message. Lot of experts there to help you. I have a 9n and had to rebuild the lift cylinder. I would change the fluids first. Use 4.5 gal. of 90
wt. gear oil or fluid recommended by the n board.

Good luck,
Robert
