Just picked up a used parts washer at an estate sale. Does anybody have any ideas on an effective parts cleaning solvent to use? Possibly some type of home brew stuff that is effective on grease & grime but that isn't explosive or too toxic to be around? If it's possible to buy parts cleaning solvent at a reasonable price I would entertain that also. Any ideas or info would be appreciated. thanks.

I use a mixture of 1 part "mineral spirits",
1 part kerosene, 1 part automatic trans fluid.

I use 1 part cleaner/degreaser (available at Napa) to
5 parts kero. Work great.

I use kerosene in my parts washer. Works really well, not explosive, and doesn't irratate my skin.

Mineral spirits 140 is what works the best in any parts cleaner ,you can pick it up at large hardware stores and some parts houses like NAPA--The grease and oil are the things that are hard on your hands and that are toxic when mixed with any cleaner
Be sure the parts washer you have has a lid and use it. Short of water anything you put in there to clean M.S or Kerosene is flameable so don't use it around heaters and water heater . I know this info because I sell SystemOne Parts Washers By the way I have a Kerosene lamp that burns quite nice. l

I've always used diesel fuel. As you well know, diesel is flammable but it's not explosive like gasoline. It cuts grease well. I'm not sure how it is on hands.

Mike:
One of the best I have found is "mineral spirits", which was recommended by the old Belsaw Co. back when I was in the small engine business. It cuts grease well, doesn't flash and doesn't dry out your hands like many commercial cleaners do (I mean really dry). Some paint stores will sell it to you bulk in your containers quite reasonabley but check around as their prices vary widely.
Good luck (-:

I agree - mineral spirits is as good as anything for a general purpose solvent Mark

Mark,
Exact same thing happened to me. I am looking for a reasonable fluid as well. I bought a 15 gallon washer at an estate sale about 3 years ago. Haven't used it yet, but I'm about to rebuild my old Porsche 914 and think the washer would be a must.
I hope to learn, as you, the "secret fluid".

If you hear of anything other than mineral spirits, please let us all know.

Thanks and good luck.
Shayne

Thanks for the advice. Called Northern and found out that they sell Parts Washer Solvent but want about $5.00 a gallon for the stuff. Will gladly try your ideas before I part with that kind of money. Thanks Again.
