Well, I got my shiny new Atlas lathe home and couldn't wait to start making steel wool. I have learned the following:
1:Lathes are addictive and fun!
2:I can now do lots of neato keen things I used ta couldn't do before. Some things I could do before I can now do much faster!
3: I shoulda got a lathe years ago!
4: My memory actually works a little and I can remember some of the machining stuff I learned in college. ( SUNY MO'ville) 5: Atlas lathes might be the Yugo of the lathe world, and my particular yugo was made a few decades ago, but it still does what I need. 6: The internet has more information on it about lathes than most books that Amazon.com sells. In particular the Clausing website, the US Army Machinist manual, and Atlas hobbyist sites are all cool. Now If I could just remember where they were.At least I remember www.dogpile.com to find em! 7: Steel wool produced by the lathe is useless for scrubing pots.
8: The pieces I made for my backhoe bucket saved me the cost of the lathe. ( I do , however, have more of an appreciation for what the shops were charging. )

Thanks for the encouragement guys!

Interesting. I will be taking an Adult Ed "Machine Shop 101" course this fall.

When I took the "Welding 101" course several years back, I immediately went out and bought a MIG welder and a set of torches, and have easily saved enough on repairs to pay for them several times. I get this uneasy feeling that "Machine Shop 101" will have a similar effect on me.

What model of Atlas lathe did you get? How big is it? How old is it? How did you find it? And, if you don't mind my asking, about how much did you have to give for it?

Thanks for any replies.

Paul
