A friend has a generator with a 10 HP B&S engine. We cannot get the engine to run smooth. It appears to be running very rich. Black smoke, a lot of soot on muffler and spark plug. Choke is operating OK, float is free and valve and seat appear fine. Idle adjustment has little or no effect at any speed from Idle through Run. There are no adjustments on main jet. Engine is less than a year old with very few hours. Any clues?

On a B&S 10H engine in a riding mower I cranked the engine with the sparkplug out.Now it will not even pop. Did I put it out of timing, and whats my next bright move??

it seems to me that the engine might be burning oil if there is soot on the muffler.

ISN'T THIS MOTER STILL UNDER WARRANTY?? SHOULD BE
AT LEAST 1 YEAR WARRANTY IF NOT 2 DEPENING ON ENGINE. You might check gas & filter but I wouldn't mess with engine to much or you could void warranty take it to local authorised repair
center

This is maybe too simple but it happens. Check your gas tank cap for a plugged vent hole.

The only thing i can think of, since it's running too rich, and there's no main jet adjustment, is it's starving for air. Is the air filter clean? Try running it without filter to see if it smooths out( not in dusty conditions). Lot's of folks don't think about the filter. Good luck, Ned

Good point Ned. An associate of mine tipped his Honda mower on its sided to clean the bottom, and when he tried to use it the next time, it had the same symptoms, ie running rich and black smoke. Turned out to be the dry type air filter was oil soaked. He tipped the mower the wrong way when cleaning, ie carb down. Removed filter and ran ok. He went and got a new air filter before using again.

If this has a float bowl type carb , the float might be sticking. Disassemble and check it out.

The first items we checked were the Choke and the float. Both were fine. If it only had an adjustable needle valve on the main jet I think I would be fine. Since there is no adjustment, Something else must have gone way wrong for it to be running so rich.

Had a similar experience on a year-old generator with a B&S engine. Problem turned out to be a pinhole in the vacuum-operated fuel pump diaphragm. Gas was being sucked up the vacuum line into the manifold. A new diaphragm solved the problem.

Thank You Bob. That is the kind of idea I was looking for. I will check it out as soon as I can and post my results.

Paul -

Check also the carburetor itself for a diaphragm. Some models of B&S carburetors (Flow Jet, or Pulsa Jet?) have a vacuum diaphragm type fuel lift pump built right into them. A pinhole in the diaphragm makes them impossible to adjust.

I recently bought a Craftsman Tractor (5 Years old) with a siezed engine - looks to have run out of oil, can't turn main shaft. It has a B&S 15.5HP Model 28N707 Type# 0173-01 Engine. I wanted to know if it is worth repairing rather than just buying a short block?

Thanks for your comments
