Hi again. I am about to get my own lather to make backhoe bushings, pivots for bucket loader, and other miscellaneous fabrication work around... Here in the want ads lathes run from 500 up to whatever you want to pay.. Any hints, brands to watch out for, help appreciated. I have single phase power, but am not adverse to using a phase converter. Are ATLAS or LOGAN lathes any good?
THANKS!

I have a 9" South Bend, '50's vintage, that has been very usefull over the years. It can be moved by two strong people after some disassembly, costs about $900 with tooling, and still has factory support. You may want to check out the Meridian Machinery site Link which has a lot of good information about buying machine tools.

Thanks for the comments.. An Atlas lathe happenned to follow me home the other day....
We have a new name for that side of the shop now...." The Steel Wool Factory"..... ..
Lots of fun, and I think eventually I'll make something useful with it! Now if I could just get these old brain cells to remember the machining course I took in college...
Those websites were really good, too. I especially liked the ones on buying and inspecting used machine tools!

Atlas, South Bend, LeBlond, Rockwell and Clausing are all decent brands for average shop use. Myford (an English company I think) is a reall Cadillac in quality and in price. The most important parts of the lathe are really the accessories, which will set you back a lot of bucks if the lathe doesn't come with many accessories.
Expect to pay $500-1200 for a decent used lathe with some accessories.

Truck -- Atlas lathes are generally regarded as light duty, although they have a following. Logan lathes, which were sold under the Logan and Montgomery-Ward brands (although I don't know if all M-W lathes were Logan-built . . . so be cautious) are very well regarded. There are many, many different brands of lathes, some better than others, but when buying used machinery, the condition of the individual machine is as important as the brand. If you don't already know lathes, and I suspect that you must not simply because you ask this question, I strongly suggest that you take a night class at a trade school, junior college, or local high school if at all possible. The chaski web site mentioned in jeff w's posting is excellent. Good luck. John
