Anyone know a good source for a tap that is the same thread as many brake lines? It is 24 threads/inch, and probably 7/16.

I don't know if it is a NPT or not (it is close to a 1/8" NPT, but the standard there is 27 tpi).

Curiously, it is the same thread as a 1/8 compression fitting.

Nobody- i mean nobody, McMaster Carr included, seems to have a tap like this.

I am trying to rig a sediment bowl on my Ford tractor which has a replacement Zenith carb, which has this wacky thread.

Thanks for the leads. I'll file them away for future reference.

I ended up just tapping everything out to 1/4 NPT and all is well now. Considerably larger than what was there, but there was enough metal to do it. The threads in the carb were bunged up anyway.

Thanks

Just got a Grand Tool Supply flyer. 7/16-24 rh plug tap 483-881, bottom tap 483-882, taper tap 483-883 $8.35 each, spiral point 483-884 $9.60. www.grandtool.com, 800-922-0512, fax 800-866-5730, U.S. Highway 46 & Huyler Street, PO Box 2228, Teterboro, NJ 07608 A trick used by old-timers is to take a smaller tap of the pitch needed and place something in one of the flutes. You have to experiment to get the correct thread diameter. I've used a piece of brass brazing rod. Try it, it's a neat trick. Easy to go oversize though. Good Luck! Joe Fabregas

Try posting here, there are some very knowledgeable tool people on this site. A couple of jerks as well, but you'll spot them quickly. An answer from MarkKw would be a reliable one.
