Tractor has 6v system of positive to ground, negative to starter. Removed battery, charged, reinstalled and ammeter now reading negative whereas it was reading positive before the battery was charged and reinstalled. What did I do wrong? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

You may have done nothing wrong. Sometimes a battery can get reversed. In other words, the positive terminal becomes negative and the negative terminal becomes positive. If the battery you put in was ever installed incorrectly this can happen. I have one that did this. I fixed it by totally discharging it and charging it correctly. It came back to about 90% of original.

If the rest of the system is working, you have probably reversed the connections at the ammeter. Usually all the current from the battery except the starter lead goes through the meter. If it is going "toward" the battery it is charging. If it is going "away" from the battery it is discharging. The only way the meter "knows" the difference is which way it is going through the movement. You can check by turning on lights or something with the engine not running. If it shows "charge" reverse the leads on the meter (unhook the battery while moving the leads for safety).

Hi Bob I don't think you would have reversed the leads on the amp meter so your battery is either hooked up reverse or you put your charger on it wrong and charged it up in reverse. If you
charged it up wrong, discharge it completely and re- charge correctly. 2nd If your battery is connected backwards, simply reverse the connections to the battery.
Hope this helps. Leon
