We had to put one of the dogs down on Friday night. Heart problems, anemia, various infections, and finally pneumonia over the past two months of antibiotics, etc.

I would like to make her a headstone with my own hands. It doesn't have to be fancy (which is good, as I am not much of an artist). Is there a Dremel bit that will carve granite? How about limestone? Is there a sanding product that will work on stone (I don't have a sandblaster).

I'm pretty sure I'll make a mess of it if I have to use a chisel for the finish work, so I'm looking for something cheap and relatively easy.

I am interested in ding stone carving for my garden. Is an air tool grinder sufficent for the job? Or would I simply just grind down my grinder.

I started with silicon carbide sandpaper and a silicon carbide grinding stone. They cut, but not fast, and wear out too quick.

I found a set of Black & Decker diamond bits for their Wizard rotary tool that fit the Dremel for about $25. I was a bit skeptical, but they work pretty well.

I taped a printout of the dog's name and dates on the smoothed face of the stone and ground right through the paper. I think the results are quite satisfactory.
