My father-in-law has a Honda generator (2200 watts) that he bought 20 years ago and used very little. He said that it just barely ran with the choke pulled half out the last time he tried it which was about 4 or 5 years ago. He suspected that the carburetor was gunked up.

I've taken the carburetor off, and it had about a quarter inch of varnish and gunk in the settling bowel, and the float valve is frozen solid. How's the best way to clean this mess up? Is this a do it yourself job, or should I take it to a shop that specializes in this? Or would it be better in the long run to just buy a new carb?

PS: I know that this isn't antique tractor related, but this should be a piece of cake for the expert mechanics here. Thanks.

Many thanks for the advice. The laquer thinner worked like a charm, although it took two days. After a complete dissasembly, cleaning, and re-assembly, I cranked it about a dozen times without the sparkplug installed to circulate the oil and suck some gas into the system. After installing the spark plug, it started on the third pull. Total cost of the repair was $1.99 for the laquer thinner. What a deal!

I agre with Dan, tou should be able to save carb. Before soaking, disassemble the carb first and try to save all rubber-like and plastic parts separate from strong solvents. If you start poking things with wire be very carefull not to REAM any small holes larger in the soft metals, or you may be better off throwing carburetor away. My local Honda "dealer's" gets $23- thats (TWENTY THREE DOLLARS, HONDA!!!) for a float needle alone. I don't ever want to buy a carburetor. A spray can of carb cleaner is very effective with the little tube to clean passageways with. Good idea to wear eye protection, maybe I'm just a klutz cuz I managed to spray myself in the face dozens of times, burns the eyes pretty bad.

I've done this many times. Soak the carb in lacquer thinner for several days ( in a ventilated area ) it evaporates rapidly, so keep the coffee can covered. After soaking . poke out the orifices with a very small wire, and spray lac. thinnner thru them. good luck
