Well, I've had it. I have yet to purchase a tool from Harborfreight that was worth it's purchase price. My last purchase was a Sandblaster. After two days use the fitting at the bottom of the pressure vessle burst, and blasted sand in all directions. Their customer service department took more than a week to get back to me, and said that the part is on back order, and won't be available for at least two weeks. They won't refund my money, and they won't exchange the unit. They also won't see me in their store ever again. Save your valuable time and money..... Stay out of Harborfreight tool stores.

I agree with all the comments about "getting what you pay for". My current problem with HF is getting charged for things when you shouldn't.

Having "won" items on several of their auctions, ordering them only to find out they are "out of stock", although they still send a partial order, along with their $5.95 "free" shipping/handling charge. Once is a mistake - 3 times is a crime.

If they advertise 10 items for auction, they should in fact have 10 items to deliver. If I did that on e-bay it would be fraud (and probably is with HF too).

I ordered a HVLP sprayer online, on sale. Since I order alot of tools online, when I never recieved it, ($140) I just figured I'de forget about it. About 4 months later I was doing my taxes, and found a reciept for it and I was charged for it but I never got it. I called the CS number for a week & never got through. I finally drove to their Camarillo location, got a CS rep, told them I was charged and never got it. No questions asked, signed a form, and in a week got a new unit. I believe it was the post office who blew it but Harbor frieight made good. I have no complaints of any tool I've purchased. If you want Craftsman, you'll pay for it. HF makes functionable tools at a reasonable price.

Harbor is a real hit or miss outfit. I order stuff from them all the time. I stay away from no brand air and power tools they offer. The reconditioned tools I have bought are great, and simple hand tools work fine. Be prepared to suffer some disapointment in the performance. I would stay away from the wrenches, pliers, and hammers, unless they are clearence of name brands(like Channel Lock). It is true, you get what you pay for; if you think your going to high performance for a few dollars, your wrong

I'm so sorry you had a bad experience with Harbor Freight. Fortunately I have been satisfied with their free shipping for orders over $50. Does Northern Tools offer that? I don't think so except for select items just recently offered. Yeah, you can get some cheap stuff, but like my old pappy taught me a long time ago, "you get what you pay for". If you're a cheapskate and pay cheap prices then you get cheap stuff. Have you ever heard the phrase "caveat emptor"? Simply stated it says "buyer beware". Are you aware that one of the good old American tool suppliers (Craftsman) sells foreign made goods as well. It's just a better quality Taiwanese product. After all, does a Yugo compare with a Cadillac?

I have ordered the cheap stuff and I have ordered the good stuff from harbour freight and I have found that the cheap stuff is still worth the price I paid, If I just want something to work a perticular job( one time ) I order the cheap and use it carefully, but if I want a tool that can stand up to the long haul then I buy the best but it's still from harbour freight. These people even tell you where the tool is made, and when you learn which country puts real steel in their tools you'll know which ones to buy. I have one of their sand blasters and have used the thing so much that if it fell apart tomorrow I would feel good about it and probably order another, I am out of the ceramic nozzles for it and am using a junk brass ball valve as a nozzle, but even if you had bought it from another company you might have to wait a month for the part, retract your comment and let them stand by you and your purchase.

The Harbor Freight customer service department is difficult to get in touch with and not very helpful.
I've tried to get a replacement part for an HVLP spraygun for more than four months. It cracked after two hours of use and they can't even find the part in their listings.
I bought a set of "IMPACT" bits that twisted when used with a 3/8 hand ratchet. A local Snap-on man has them now, he loves to show them off at each of his customer stops.
A six month battle over a mis-represented "two speed tilesaw", ended with disatisfaction.
The information denotes a "two speed motor", which is totally true....I see they continue to advertise the same saw. You'll need lots of luck when dealing with Harbor Freight.

I do not know how they stay in business? I ordered a shop press 17 days ago and still do not have it. That is from CA to AZ. They must be shipping it by mule. I called customer service and received the old run around... this is the last time I will order from them, to many companys selling tools at discount to have to put up with the frustration.

I called the Harborfreight tool customer service dept. and asked them if they were aware of this site. They said no. I told them that if they did not address these problems that I would never order anything from them again.
I'm glad for sites like this.

I bought a Central Pneumatic (Harbor Freight Brand)AIR NIBBLER PN P-36866 a few months ago. The cutter broke after less than 5 minutes of use. I called their parts department to order a replacement cutter. I was told the part was discontinued and no longer available and they had no plans of finding a replacement. I find this very disapointing since they are still selling this tool in the local store and make claims that if you have any problems with a tool you can order replacement parts from them. BULL!! And yes they do sell name brand tools, but I can find the same name brand tools for less any day of the week. This is the second time I have been burned by them. From now on I will buy name brand tools elsewhere.

Habor Freight advised me that they had misinformed me regarding the availability of the replacement cutter. They now say that the part "IS AVAILABLE".
Thanks to the power of sites like this, the matter got the attention it deserved.

Please accept my apologies on behalf of Customer Service Harbor Freight Tools. I will forward this e-mail to my Supervisor, so that she may forward it on the District Manager of that Retail Store.

Thank you for your time.

I don't think my complaint should be forwarded to the local Retail Store Manager because my complaint is not that the store manager has knowingly made a false claim. I think it is a Harbor Freight Tools Corporate policy that has created this lack of product support. I notice you still have this tool listed on your WEB page even though your parts person stated that the cutter, which is the part that, by far, needs replacing more than any other part on this tool, has been discontinued.
The Manager at the Lomita store had 6 units on the shelf and was surprised when I informed him that the cutter was discontinued.

Either produce the cutter for this Air Nibbler or don't bother with a response. Any thing else would only be fodder.

i have empathy w/ you in this matter i recently ordered parts for my multi machine(lathe milling drilling combo) it was a simple order 1 motor for this machines lathe. after 48min on hold i finally got through then made my order waited 5 days to recieve motor. all this is fine till i receive motor they packed a 25lb 1/2 hp electric motor in loose styrofoam peanuts. was it damaged?
YOU BET!!!! damaged before they shipped it i ordered a new motor...they shipped one that appeares to have been ripped off of some machine that they dropped as the end bell (cast iron construction) was shattered the fan housing was dented and the fan broken. how do i know that this was done prior to shipping. the broken parts that fell off/out were not included in the box the parts that were left where to big to fall free from motor. customer service....not helpful would not recomend this company or its equipment to anyone!!!!

I have similar complaints. Aways was a devoted customer, in the past. I still haven't received the pully and am without a sander. Don't know what to do at this point. Refer to the copy of m email to them, below....

Hi What the heck has happened to the quality of your products? On 1/9//03 I purchased a Belt Sander(inv. 2146205). I used it twice, then around July I turned it on and the top pulley broke in half. I called support and was told it's beyond warranty but the pullys are available at $1.00 ea. Fine. I ordered 2. I got a card on 8/05 stating the order was processed(ord. 8045787). I have yet to receive it. Almost 8 mo. have past and I still need a sander. Last year I bought your 3hp. air compressor(inv. 3781967). It was about 2 months before I could use it due to a very poorly assembled pressure switch which leaked badly. Then another 2 months before I could rebuild the fittings to stop leaking enough to use it. It still leaks off when the tank is filled. You guys are making Sears more popular. I used to buy all kinds of tools from you and they were pretty good. What happened????? Is there any info you have on policy or quality changes which may restore confidence?
Thank you

I have been a customer of Harbor freight tools for years and I have found that I like their tools ,I look them over before I buy them and although some things are really cheaply made, like the two dollar pickle fork that I bought from them that bent its way open on the second use but hey it was only two bucks, and it did the job it was intended for! Who cares if I wont be leaving it to my grandson in my will....IF YOU BOUGHT SOMETHING AND YOU ARE NOT SATISFIED THEN YOU ARE THE FOOL FOR NOT LOOKING IT OVER..... .HARBOR FREIGHT IS A GOOD THING TO HAVE AROUND FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE NOT IN TO SPENDING OUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON A TOOL THAT WILL BE USED ONLY ONCE OR TWICE..... .

Its been a few years since I purchased anything from them. Finally the catalogs quit coming in the mail. When I did buy tools, I stuck with the good American made stuff.

I have had very good luck with Northern Hydraulics and Tool Crib of The North. Excellent service and good quality stuff.

I have bought more than a fair share of things from Harbor Freight. You have to watch what you buy. You pretty much get what you pay for, but for a shade tree, it allows me to buy things that I don't often use without going broke. I have bought quite a number of their assortments- bolts, o rings, roll pins, etc. Pretty good stuff. I just bought a 4X8 trailer, which really went together well and turned out nice - you just don't want to be in a hurry to get it. Bought some mics that weren't too bad.

As far as motorized, I have $99 chop saw, I very rarely use, but works well, a small drill press and then the only things that didn't pan out were their 4 1/2" non name grinders. Burned up two of them and gave up.

Moral of the story, if there is one, expect to get what you pay for-definitely buyer beware, but for certain uses, works for me.

My opinion.

Jerry

Ditto. Hand tools that have few or no moving parts can be obtained for the hobbiest within reason, with good results. But these are not professional tools, and don't expect to make a living with them. The lead in is buying hand tools, then deciding to buy something more complex and expensive. That is what I did on the compressor motor. [see below] Bought oriental hand tools for years, then decided to buy a motor. Gotcha!

Yesterday, I went to the Harbor store in Lakewood, CA. This was my first time there and will be my last. The quality of their products is mostly junk. It took me a while but I finally figured out why. Almost all of their products are made in China. China produces the worst products sold anywhere but they are cheap. No wonder we are losing jobs in the U.S.

We don't have their stores here on the East Coast (at least, not that I'm aware of) but I DID try their catalog, once.

Got hit with the old bait and switch, cancelled the order, haven't dealt with them since. Their catalog goes straight from my mail box to my recycling box.

I have purchased quite a few tools over the years from Harborfreight. Some of the little things, less than $5 are not too good, but some are. I purchased a sander Belt-type. It was not good, so I called them and bright and early two days later UPS showed up sealed it up had their own shipping label, said thanks and were gone. My credit card was debited for the amt.of the sander, the day that they picked it up to return. No postage either way. Some people can't be satisfied no matter what you do.

Mark. I haven't bought a great deal from Harbor Freight but what I have seemed to be good. I purchased a 4 1/2" grinder just a couple of months ago and have had good success with it, but I also know that one can have trouble with any company from time to time.

A year and a half ago I bought an electric motor to replace the one on the shop compressor for about 1/2 price of a retail store. What a deal!. It arrived with the start-up capacitor bad. No refunds or exchanges. What a deal! Took the cap off the old motor, and it finally worked until a month ago when the windings went up in smoke. What a deal? You gets what what you pays for. Well I think that every one of us know how to judge the quality of our tools and can tell the difference between a good one and a bad one, if you really choose carefuly you might get a good quality item at a good price, I have bought quite a few hand tools from Harborfreight and have no complaints so far.

So the moral here would be,know your needs and choose carefully and you won't be dissapointed.

Sorry, these are my general coments, not to a RE:RE: etc.
I have several categories for goods at any retailer. 1 Good heavy duty (expect to last indefinately) 2 Good (expect to last until I get my moneysworth+ out of it) 3 Non operating items such as a stand (if I can't bend it, it will probably last) 4 Unique items (usually these are not good, but you may get an idea on how to improve.) Throw away items (example paint brushes-why clean them? just toss them.) Sometime I will do this with certain power tools. If I can cut a hole for a vent in the roof using their $25 recripicating saw, it has paid for itself. As opposed to having someone do it. Conclusion: if you are careful you can get good buys. BUT-BUT IF YOU EVER NEED CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT A LOCAL STORE IS NOT AUTHORIZED TO GIVE---WELL YOU MIGHT AS WELL WATCH THE CROSS COUNTRY SNAIL RACES. I ordered an item, which was delivered in less than a week, but one part was missing. I couldn't use the item without it. The part came 12 thats right 12 weeks later. They had to order it from the manufacturer. WHAT REALLY BUGGED ME WAS THAT EVERY STORE HAD SEVERAL OF THAT PART IN STOCK.
OH PS Don't wory about the quality of products produced in other countries. You get what you buy. Look at the disclosure statements on any new car. You will be supprised how much of your domestic car is made in another country.
