Is this a test? I think both are the same in perincipal. Shop dust collection systems have more suck, larger waste holding capacity, and filters appropriate for the volume of air being circulated and the material being removed. I suppose you could adapt a central vacume cleaner to shop use but I think you will be disapointed. It takes a lot of air moving very fast to carry away sawdust and wood chips in the volumes generated by most shop equipment. Also, wood "dust" can be explosive under the right conditions. I my shop I would want a system engineered for the job at hand.

Thanks. Nope this was not a test. When I built my house, I "preped" for a central vac system, but never finished the job. Now, after pricing them, I got to thinkin (dangerious I know) why not use a dust system for the house? That way, I'll kill 2 birds w/ 1 blower. Now, not being familuar w/ either one, I thought about all you guys. Ain't the web wonderful?
I was telling my wife about "the plan" and visions of "Home Improvment" came to mind when we started talking about vacuum attachments and the drapes, er, "what drapes honey, did we install drapes at one time?"

Interesting idea. The central vac system normally starts automatically when something is plugged into one of the ports, so you would have to rig your dust collection system to do that. Also, you now have a lot of nasty stuff in your sawdust collection system that wouldn't normally be there, like flakes of skin, hair, Cheerios, etc, that are not as sanitary as a bunch of nice fluffy sawdust.

Yeah I know, but it's all trash anyway as far as I'm concerned. In the shop, there's sawdust, metal chips from the lathe, dog hair, wire strippings, etc. I've got an all purpose shop.
BTW in the handle of the central vac system, isn't there a switch to turn the whole system on/off thru a control relay?
I was also wondering about vacuum pressure and volume ratings. Central vac systems are rated how high the system will pull water, like 120" or so. How about dust systems?

One of the home improvement shows (Hometime, I think?) did a show not long ago where they installed a dust collection system for a basement shop that was designed to double as a central vac system.

A search of the PBS web page might help.
