Talked to a chemical suppy salesman who recommended using phosphoric acid for removing rust. The active ingrediant in "navel jelly" is also phosphoric acid. I can get 85% phosphoric acid for about $20 a gallon which would make up alot of solution. Anybody tried this or have any comments?

Another alternative is to use electrolysis if the part is fairly small. From this link, look in Lore, then look for the article about Rust Removal with Electrolysis.

Thanks guys for the info. I plan to by the phosphoric acid in a week or two. I'll post a new message to let all know how it worked.

Hi Harold - if memory serves I read about using Phosporic acid which works to remove rust. The problem was more related to the powdery residue that was left afterwards and that this should be mostly removed or the primer coat of paint would not adhere properely. It seemed advantageous to leave a bit on to prevent the bare metal from rusting but not a loose powder form. I'm giving you this information as something you could check into rather than as something from my own experience or as valid information. Hope this helps. Alan K.

Do you have any tips for removing rust from a concrete driveway?

Harold-I heard of a car restorer who would soak shop rags (clean ones) in metal conditioner and lay them on the car. He had to keep wetting them with the acid, and it might take a while to soak the rust loose. I think metal cond. is mostly phosphoric acid, so your deal will be better. I'd check it out at a local auto body supply store. We found sandblasting is quickest and the most effective way to remove rust, just don't try it on large, flat panels. E-mail me or call 717-242-2270 if you have any questions on restorations.
