Compressor Questions

Hi, Question 1 - I've had my compressor for a few years, it's a 5.5 HP with a 30 Gal tank. When I use my impact wrench (1/2 inch) it usually can't undo tight or rusted bolts. I was taking the tire off a tractor the other day, and ended up using a socket wrench and a pipe for 5 out of 6 lug nuts. I have the regulator set at 90psi, but I think I need more volume. So, will adding another air tank help? Or do I need a bigger compressor?

Question 2 - I want to keep my compressor in the basement and run a line to my garage. I've seen several posts here talking about using PVC vs black pipe. Recently I've seen a couple that use copper pipe or flexible air hose. Is the copper pipe regular water pipe? And why not just use a section of hose? That seems like the easiest way to go?
Thanks for your help.
Doug

Regarding your thoughts on plastic pipe, it is discouraged. Any oil carry over leaches the plastizer from the plastic making it brittle. sooner or later the pipe shatters.

My IR impact wrench recommends a max of 90 psi, but it is an older model.

We use copper with sweat fittings at the plant, smooth with good flow, installs quick.

In addition to going to 1/2 inch hose,I have found
the quick disconnect fittings to be a big pressure drop. When I am unable to get the impact wrench to do what I want I have taken a hose from the regulator to the impact wrench with no fittings and gotten much more torque.

I wouldn't put the compressor in the basement!
There is too much humidity there and water will collect in the tank bottom causing rust and early tank failure, IMO.

What size air hose are you using? I had the same problem, I was using 1/4" air line. Switched to 1/2", and the problem is solved. If that's not it, you say you've had the compressor for years, could it be worn out? Also, pressure is inversely proportional to volume. I run mine at 120 psi. I am considering hooking up an 80 gallon reciever, for when I want to use the impact for extended periods. I would route a flexible air line, it's easier and cheaper.

I agree with Bill, check you airline size first and up the pressure. If that doesn't do it you could be in the same boat with me, I have a cheap half inch drive impact wrench that usually doesn't get the job done. I have a neighbor that has a good one (not sure of the name, Chigago Pneumatic maybe) that he paid twice as much for as I did, but it will do 4 times the work.

I went over to Sears, in the States, and picked up a 1/2 inch Ingersoll Rand 2131. Even with the exchange rate it was worth it. 425 ft.lbs. forward and 650 reverse! Helps with those nasty rusted!!??!@@!@! bolts. Don't let the plastic handle fool you either, it's typical IR quality.

I have a plastic IR 1/2 inch gun and I work with guys who paid twice as much for tool truck brands. The IR is much more comfortable especially when its cold out, lasts about as long and is as powerfull.

Ya, it's sure a nice gun. I've snugged up 1 1/8 (1 1/2 socket) nuts with mine. Works like a charm! My Snap-on dealer says he sells more IR than his own brand

WOW, Thanks for all of the feedback, I'm using 3/8" hose, I think I'm going to try the 1/2". And my impact wrench is a less expensive brand, so if the bigger hose doesn't do it, I think it would be smart to get a better wrench.
Thanks again,
Doug
