I have an old house (ca. 1800), which has a dirt basement(mostly fine, powdery silt material). I want to pour a cement floor, but need to remove about 6-8" of dirt in order to have headroom. I'd like to find or make a large vacum with 25-40' of hose to raise dirt out of basement and into truck. Otherwise, it'll be a bucket-brigade and sore arms. Thanks.

You might want to try using an insulation blower, hooked up to vacuum material out. If the material is very fine this would work, but if there is any rocks or etc. it will jamb up the hose and/or blower. Good luck

I work in and around Cleveland Ohio and we build gas stations. When we uncover the underground storage tanks to update them we hire an industrial vacuum service to remove the pea gravel that the tanks are buried in. They use vacuum trucks that suck the gravel into the back of the truck and when it's full it dumps just like a dump truck. I don't know what this service costs, but it's one option you have. Hope this helps.

How about some kind of an old grain elevator or auger. I think possibly you could find an old auger and poke it through a window opening.

Just a thought.
