Howdy Folks,

I am considering buying a small wirefeed welder to do little fixes around the place. Every one that I have looked at will weld only up to 3/16". Some of the stuff I will be welding may be up to 1/2". Can I use the mig on it successfully? Maybe "V" the cut and make a couple of passes? If not, I think I will go with a stick. TIA.

I Have been using my millermatic 130 for about 3 years now. Previously most of my welding was done with gas. If your doing odd jobs mostly the Mig is the way to go. I use the argon/co2 tanks but the metal has to be clean, this all depends on the wire used. I have welded 1/2" and the way you suggested is no problem. Selecting a unit with the wire you want to use will be the key. My neighbor who was striclty an arc man dealing with 3/8th's and above just sold his arc welder after having purchased a 220volt mig machine. The migs are so versatile.

You might want to get a machine capable of handling .045 solid or flux core wire with gas.
Remember to preheat the 1/2 inch material. I've
got a Canox (Miller) Migmatic 200, and it works
just fine. But I have to admit that I go with the
stick machine for anything over 1/8 inch.
