This may be a dumb question, but can you weld Stainless Steel to mild steel (A36)? If so what rod would you use?

Thanks for all the info. Now I know that it will work. I'll contact my local supplier.

Bob, if you are welding carbon steel (A36) to austenitic Stainless steel (A240 Type 304) use E309 or E316 Electrode. Smooth welding, nice apperance, easy to weld with.
If you don't know what type of stainles, Try either of the two electrodes listed above and watch for cracks in the stainless. If it is another type of stainless and you know what it is, E-Mail me and I will look up the proper welding electrode.

Regards and Don't breathe the welding fumes.

Diamonds Arc AWS A5.4 stainless steel electrodes are designed for welding stainless steels to low alloyed steels. Diamond arc can be used in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.

There is a special rod (XERGON?) that you'll need.
Stainless, or mild steel rods won't be adequate,
especially if it's a high stress joint. A welding
supply store should be able to supply these. I can't remember the exact name. If you find out
please post back, I'm sure that information would
benefit a lot of people.

Two years ago I cut pieces of stock 2" square 1/4" mild steel tubing and had 5/8 stainless steel nuts welded on to make dock brackets that were immersed in the lake and I did not want nut treads that would soon rust off. Stainless steel weld rods were used. Sorry that I have no technical details. I suggest phoning any good local welder, shop or supply store for information if you do not get more here. Good Luck AK

They always recomend type 310 for welding type 304 to steel, I worked at a pressure vessel fab shop
they would use type 316 and never have any problems. readily available too. Type 308 would have a tendency
to crack down the middle of the bead on first pass.
