"His septic line is 30+ years old and has been gurgling up solids, toilet paper, etc on my prop down by the front road since last spring."

How do solids and toilet paper come up through the soil covering the pipe? ...Liquids and odors I can understand, but solids?

If the sewerage is travelling almost 300' from his house and coming out at the front of your property, why does the entire pipe have to be dug/replaced? ....It seems to indicate the problem is located where his sewer line meets the main line by the road.

If indeed a new line needs to be installed, leave most of the old one in place, but install the new piping closer to the property line along the side road.

As others have asked, is the sewer present on the road in front of his house? ...The sewer system may have been expanded in the past 30 years.
