Can power steering and/or transmission pumps be used as hydraulic pumps?? I would like to make a couple items such as a small acreage tilt trailer and a wood splitter. Can anyone tell me if these items have the volume and the power and is there much to adapting the hoses?

Transmission pumps are part of the case. Northern(northern-online.com) has good pumps cheap. And more important, they have the fittings and tanks.

Power steering pumps generate VERY low volume.

Go find you a junk self propelled combine (I know a Deere 45 will work) with a belt driven pump. It is a high capacity system and has the tank, fittings, valves and cylinders all right there and matched to each other. Combines get few hours compared to tractors so the hydraulic systems are usually the best thing on a junk one.

Thankyou everyone for the valuable information. If farmer is still there, could you tell me if a 5 h.p. or 8 h.p. engine is adequate to run the combine hydraulic pump?

Yes , use a chevy. P/S pump and remove the cover, and you can use a 1/4 pipe tap and fittings.
the pump will pump. I know of 1 used on a wrecker , but it had a large ram and picked up SEMI,s.
and 1 used on a log spliter.
also hay fork, using a old modle ford starterw/ a long shaft and put a pulley for 12 volts
you have to have a tank and some valves, for the return. but pump,s are plentyful

Bob,

On my tractor, the engine driven hydraulic pump starved and froze up, shearing the pump's drive shaft (not the key unfortunately). Replacements are looking like apx $300. How viable is it to throw a automotive P/S pump on, and go with that?
