Any opinions on the different brands of chainsaws? (Poulan vs. McCulluch vs. Echo) I have 65 acres that was covered in Mesquite trees that I bulldozed down. I now plan to cut some of the trees up.

Also, is there any reason I should buy an 18" chainsaw vs. a 16"? (other than being able to handle bigger trees?)

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Stihl is great pro saw, but Echo saws run forever!Huskys break in all the wrong places.

I have used Stihl for a number of years, and have been very happy. Last year I bought a Husqvarna 365 and have not gone back to my Stihl's. You really can not go wrong buying either Husky or Stihl, both are expensive, both last forever, both are very easy to service, both use exceptional construction, and both have excellent customer support. I personally like the balanced feel of the Husky over the Stihl. I would also recommend using a shorter bar (18") and 3/8", 0.50 guage chain.

O.K. Here in the northwest the two dominant are huskvarna and sthil. It doesn't matter if your an occational cutter what saw you buy (as long as you take proper care).Iv'e owned 3 saws Mac, sthil, and last poulan. The sthil was my best saw with the longest life and the most abuse. I haven't been able to part with the money to buy a huskvarna but I bet if I bought it In the first place It probably would Have been my favorite. Get a good saw if you intend to use it for 65 acre or you'll be sorry.

If you are serious about buying a quality saw,
buy a STIHL. It's easier to work on, parts are
somewhat cheaper to buy, and it's just plain
the best saw for the money.....period. Good
luck and enjoy!!

I've owned Stihl's and Husky's for 20+ years and have to go with stihl.
Stihl has been more reliable and don't use plastic in the wrong places. Things that need stability, like starter cover, Stihl doesn't use plastic.
Air cleaner get's a little dirtier, thet's the only advantage Husk's have, so what!
Stihl recommends the proper length (shorter) bar for their saws HP rating.
Get a pro saw if you work it hard. Don't hold the throttle wide open when not cutting, and idle it far a minute after hard load so some heat can be blown away.

The only two brands of chaisaws that I would own would be a Husqvarna or a Sthil. I would have at least a 18 inch bar, I prefer a 20 or 22.

sthil chainsaws are currently not any good for professional falling as the are burning out. some succus can be had by putting on an old style carb and opening up the muffler. also sthil apparently wont warrenty the saws if the do burn out they will have some operator error excuse. having run chainsaws professionaly for 25 years i think i can safely say that when engineering changes are made on a saw and they suddenly dont perform its a good bet that i havent all of a sudden changed how i operate the saw, which leads one to believe that the changes in the saw are at fault. funny how when an error is made the sthil company wont go good for its mistakes.

Thats not very encouraging news for a guy that just (today) bought a sthil 260! Im no pro, so I hope I dont encounter the problems you are talking about, but I depend on the saw for my firewood. What engineering changes are you talking about? The only thing I know about is that some models now have catalytic converters....?

I use a very old macullah and a poulan...

The mac is over 30 years old and starts on the 3/4 pull. It is a heavy saw!!! With a 16 inch bar, it was made for a 18inch bar. It has a manual oil bar pump!!

the poulan is a 14 inch saw.

My dad gave them to me becuase they did not run...

I replace the fuel lines and filters and they start right up.

The poulan I use for smaller work, the mac for bigger work.

There are not many parts in a chain saw, a two cycle engine,(which is just a carb, piston and spark) and a clutch....which means there are not a lot of things to break,or if they do go bad replacement of the part is the better option..

I keep three sets of chains for each one, when one gets dull I take it off and replace it with a sharp one.

Bar length...

People have a tendency to cut or work with trees that are the size of the bar. It is really a mental thing, when they see a tree that is bigger than the bar length - they think the tree is too big for them. When you have a long bar you can deal with trees that are much too large for you and that can be dangerous...

Getting a 18 inch saw an putting a 16inch bar on it does two things..

1 it lowers the stress on all the parts, since you are not running the engine and its parts at full load.

2 mentally allows you to work on smaller trees that most people can deal with.

Now to answer your question...

Buy the one that your local repair dealer fixes and has parts for!!

Like all small engines you will need parts eventually and you do not want to send away to get them. Local knowledge and parts are always better. If the local guy that you know and trust sells Poulan, get a poulan, if its mac go mac, stihl etc...

One last thing - get a 1 gallon gas can, and use that to fuel the saw, it is smaller but oil and gas are best mixed and used fresh. The large gas/oil cans cause the mix to break down over time..

as a logger, aborist and a lumberjack i have heard a lot of theories and facts. i have tested just about every saw on the market, past and present. it is important to buy the saw that fits your needs. if you are someone that only cuts small branches around your home once a year, a smaller saw with a smaller bar might be for you. if you run a saw a little more,a little more saw might be for you. do not be confussed by the size of the bar. a dealer will put a 24 inch bar on a 2.5 saw if you ask for it and are willing to pay for it. picking the chain type is also very important. it is also important to run the saw more than once a year. letting them sit will do a lot of damage. and do not let them sit on a cement floor. if you are looking for more opinions on chainsaws go to your search engines and look up tool shed forum, husky vs. stihl. or contact someone that does tree work for a living. no matter what you run, it is important to protect yourself. head, hearing, sight, hands and legs. any questions feel free to send an e-mail. chainsaw@frontiernet.net take care;marty

If you want a saw that does not need repairing (no kidding), get a Dolmar. They will start in the first three pulls and if they don't the dealer will give you another one. Remember, anyone can guarantee crap, but crap doesn't cut wood, good saws do.

From using several types of saws in different price ranges all I can say is there is no best or worse. Go with a spring mounted handle assembly to keep it from beating you to death. If you are looking at a small variety, check the type of clutch it has in it. You don't want one with the weights shaped like an "S" and no springs. These are put in the smaller, cheaper saws and will only disappoint you. Good luck.

AS FAR AS McCULLUCH GOES I PITTY ANYONE WHO HAS ONE THEY WENT BANKRUPT,POULAN'S ARE JUNK. I HAVE A ECHO 5000 IT IS THE BEST SAW I OWNED. STHIL HAS GOT TO THE POINT WHERE THEY ARE LIVING OFF THEIR NAME, THEY STILL MAKE GOOD PRO SAWS BUT ARE TO MUCH FOR THE AVERAGE SAW OWNER. HUSKY ARE A HIGH PRICE SAW AS WELL WHEN COMPAIRING SAW TO SAW. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A GOOD SAW AT LEAST STICK WITH A NAME BRAND NOT SEARS OR POULAN OR YOU WILL HAVE A HARD TIME FINDING PARTS FOR IT.DEPENDING ON WANT KIND AND SIZE YOU GET WILL TELL YOU WHAT SIZE BAR YOU NEED. YOU DON'T WANT TO GET A BAR THAT WILL KILL YOUR SAW FOR POWER. I USE AN 18" BAR AND HAVE PLENTY OF POWER AND THE SAW IS WELL BALENCED. HOPE THIS HELPS.

I had a Partner-Farmer 55 in which the cylinder went after 12+ years and no parts available. A year ago I bought a Homelite 40+cc w/20" bar at FleetFarm - low cost saw, but it was stolen within a month, so I have no idea how long it would have lasted. Now I learn Homelite isn't that good (made by John Deere), Partner is long gone out of business, McCoulgh (sp?) out of business, Poulon not that good of a reputation for long life either, and new Stihls aren't recommended either. All I want is a good dependable 16-18" bar on a good 40+cc engine for dropping the occassion 20+" @ 30-40' and branch work around the yard. I don't think I want a heavy 55cc again.

Any suggestions? Reply to email if possible, as I may not find this post again. Thanks. BobA.

John Deere has just come out with some new chainsaws, not built Homelite. They are very good quality. Go to JohnDeere.com to see models available.

PS- I don't think you can complain if you got 12 years with no problems on the old one!!!

If you get a bigger saw that can handle a longer bar your back will thank you in the mornin, short bars mean lots of bending over to cut your wood.

Here in Ky most of the loggers are using Stihl. They are the dominant saw, but they also have good repair facilities available to them. Some of the more affluent loggers (read those who can get Dad ta buy them) use Jonsareds. The timber they cut here are primarily hardwoods. Oak, hickory, maple, and sycamore. Very little pine.

I agree with the previous post, buy the longer barred saw, and get a bar 2 in shorter, also find a source for Oregon Chipper Chain. I have cut many cords of wood and have found that this chain holds up best. Keep it off the rocks and out of th dirt or ewlse buy lots of files. That's a chains worst enemy.

Ken,

From posts on this and other sites I get the impression McCulluch is in trouble and that parts are hard to come by. I have had three Craftsman/Poulans. The first two gave me good service. The third, which was the latest consumer model, stopped oiling the bar about two months after I purcased it. The local saw shop refused to fix it because "it would not stay fixed and I would not be happy." Apparently bar oiling failure is a common problem with these saws.

Speaking of saw shops, I deal with two, one here in town, and one at my country place. Both service people who earn their livings with their saws. They sell Echo, Stil, Jonsered, and Husquivarna. They do not sell McCulloch or Poulan - that tells me something.

Consumer saws are generally sold with as much bar length as they can carry. This gives the buyer the impression they are getting more for their money. The result can be marginal performance and premature failure when the saw is asked to cut "to the tip." For my smaller saws I buy a bar at least 2" less than the one the saw comes with. For cutting up Mesquite a 14" bar is all you need. If you buy a saw with a 16" or 18" bar get a 14" bar and a couple of chains. You will be glad you did.

If you think two bars are a luxury guess again. Everyone binds a bar in a tree at one time or another. The instinct is to jurk the "#@$&" thing out. Wrong move. You usually break the tension adjuster or put a kink in the chain. The right move is to disconnect the power head from the bar and chain, mount the extra set, and continue cutting.

Incidentally, I took my Poulan back to Sears for a refund. I purchased a Husquivarna 55. Serious saw. More than you may need. I suggest you seek out a shop that sells saws to the trades. One with a service capability. They can help you pick out a saw appropriate for your use, sharpen and make up chains when you need them (Mesquite will be hard on chains), do waranty work, and keep your saw in tune. Sears wanted to ship my Poulan out o town for repairs. Don't know what you do for service if you buy from Big Lots or Home Depot.

Hi There,
I appreciate your advice about what to buy when it comes to chainsaws. I was thinking that we needed a longer than 16" bar for our farm chainsaw but with your recomendation to go with a bar shorter than the manufacturer supplies with the saw, I realize that I will get more efficiency, power and length of life from the saw if I don't ever overload it by using a longer bar. Is that correct?

I am looking for the Baileys Catalogue and Husquivarna web addresses. Can you help me?
Thanks,
Megan
