I am helping a friend fix an oil leak at the pto shaft seal on a 1949 Ford 8N tractor. We have a repair manual that tells us to remove the 4 bolts on the pto housing, which we have done, and then pull the pto shaft assembly out. The problem is the shaft does not pull out and I am wondering if there is something else holding this shaft in place? I will be at this e-mail address until friday April 30 so if you can answer my question before that I would really appreciate that. Thankyou, Bob W.

Bob, the P.T.O. shaft,Consist of the shaft, brg.,seal, and housing. The end of the shaft inside the tractor, has a spline on it,and thats all. [Be sure to drain your oil].It is probably just stuck, you may need to use a slide hammer to pull it out.Not being able to see it, I don't know if it is loose since you removed the bolts or if it's still tight. if it is still tight, be sure you removed the right bolts. It is sometimes a greasy mess around the PTO.There also 4 bracket bolts very close to the PTO flange bolts. Good luck...Jay Andrews

The reply to this last question sounds like the guy is pretty knowledgeable on pto removals. I am in the same boat. Only I think my 1951 8n has the shaft converted to the 1/8 (i think) inch larger shaft to accept todays implements. I did remove the correct bolts (and then gear oil began to flow everywhere) and the shaft slid out maybe an inch and then it stopped. I was also wondering what was holding the shaft in place because it will not come out. Also, this pto shaft wiggles around. Is this normal or should I do something about it???? Any repolies are SINCERELY appreciated.

Thanks,
