Hydraulic cylinder leak

I have a 870 john deere with hydraulic cylinder power steering. This cylinder has a weep hole on top near the hose connection ports. On hard left turns {at the steering stop} the weep hole bleeds out a bit of hydraulic fluid. Two dealers have no idea if this is a problem and have advised me to watch it. Anyone know if this weep hole is supposed to bleed out fluid or are the seals going on the cylinder? Incidently, what do you suppose makes this cylinder worth $600 to replace?

The reason the cylinder is so high, is that pretty green paint, I don't remember the number for the cylinder but take a measurement of it and the stroke, go to Tractor Supply Company if there is one near you, they will either have it or can get it for you. Best I can remember it was about $120. If you want to rebuild yours and it is the one that separates, so that you can rebuild it. Take the plunger out of it, go to NAPA or a similar parts store with the plunger, its not the piston end blown on yours, it's the rubber 0 ring on the other end of plunger. The O ring will cost less than $1. If the poly rings on the other end look wornout, you can replace them with rubber O rings too. They just don't last as long as poly plastic. What ever you do, don't JB Weld or bondo the weep hole shut, it stops the leak, but o-boy have you got a steering lock. Good luck friend-- Jerry

Not totally familiar with your particular cylinder, but have seen others on various equipment that weep when the seals and packing inside begin to fail. The weep hole is present to give leakage past the piston and end seals a place to go and not cause a fluid lock. As far as $600; The mfg. knows this is an essential part, and you probably require your tractor for earning your living. Suggest you try any hydraulic co. and stay from dealer specialties.
