Belly Mower

I am considering buying a 6ft Continental belly mower for my Massey Ferguson 50 from my neighbor who deals in used tractors. I tried out the mower, and have some questions about my setup. There seems to be no way of raising the mower completely off the ground. I want to leave it on all summer, but I do not want to have it dragging the ground when I am not mowing. Is there some other means used normally to raise and lower the front of the mower. The mower has 2 chains on the front that I was told had to connect to the tractor to prevent it from swaying. I thought that these chains could be used to attach to a lever arm that I would make for raising the front of the mower.
The 3pt hitch only raises and lowers the back of the mower over a small range. If I raise it to much, the beam on the mower hits the bottom of the tractor, and the hydraulics go into runaway condition where it is trying to raise even if I lower the control lever. I have to press the clutch to release the hydraulic pressure for it to un-jam.
Any help would be appreciated. I am trying to decide whether to buy it, and I obviously have reservations about spending the money.
Thank You Brad

Brad, the only advice I can give you is this: Do you want to use the tractor for other things? I had a belly mower under my tractor at one time and it always got in the way when I used the tractor for anything but mowing. It was heavy to put on and off and a !@#$% to work on. You have a three point hitch, why not get a three point finish mower? Thats what I did, and it is a lot nicer to work on or just drop it off to do anything else. Plus it does just as good a job as a belly mower. Hope this helps.

Brad, I agree with Bob. Get a three point finish mower. My IH 254 came with a belly mount Woods mower. With it in place the tractor was a dedicated mowing machine. Usless for any other purpose. When I broke my second $70.00 belt I traded the Woods in on a used three point finish mower. I can hook up in a couple of minutes. If I want to use my tractor with my rotary cutter (AKA bush/brush hog) it is a 5 minute change over. Same for my box blade, etc. If you live in snow country, you will want to use your tractor to plow. As you have already found out, mounting a belly mower is more than a chore. Why bother when there is a better alternative?
