I just purchased an older Onan model CK-S/259N with a Miller model AEA-200-L generator/welder.I can not get any spark. It has 2 coils. Both input wires go to one set of points. Does anyone know how this system works?

I THINK YOU SHOULD GET YOU A SERVICE MANUAL FOR THAT ENGINE AS THERE WAS TWO TYPES OF IGNITION SYSTEM USED FOR THESE ENGINES ONE WAS A BATTERY SYSTEM THE OTHER A MAGNETO. I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM YOU HAD AND THE FOLLOWING BOOKS HELP ME ALOT ALSO REGARUDLESS OF WHICH TYPE YOU HAVE THE IGNITION FIRES ON BOTH INTAKE AND EXHAUST STROKES.
THAT FOLLOWING BOOKS ARE AVABALE THRU ONAN

SERVICE MANUAL
CCK,CCKA,CCKB ENGINES
FORM NUMBER
927-0754
3-86(SPECA-J)

OPERATORS MANUAL AND PARTS CATALOG FOR CCK HOME STANDBY ELECTRIC GENERATING SET
FORM NUMBER
927-0360
(SPEC R-V)

WHILE THE SECOND BOOK DEALS WITH HOME GENERATING SET I RECOMEND YOU GET IT ANYWAY AS IT HAS VERY USFUL PARTS NUMBERS THAT WILL BE THE SAME FOR YOUR ENGINE ALSO HAS OTHER INFO YOU WILL FIND USFUL THAT WILL NOT BE IN THE SERVICE MANUAL. I HOPE THIS WILL HELP YOU.

The plug fires not only on compression but also on the exhaust. Doesn't hurt anything.

len, I have a model 305CK-1P/1AA onan generator that was "given" to me because it had no spark. It has the same set-up as yours,2 coils and one set of points and a condenser. first thing i did was put in new points, condenser, and plugs.Runs great.I also was confused about the dual coil set-up. mine appears to be a factory installation as the mounting brackets and wiring are all original.one of the nice things about this motor is that it runs at 1800 rpm and purrs away.If you e-mail me I can point you to a Cummins dealer in Mass. who has parts, if you haven't got a source yet. Enough outa me. good luck.

I've worked on few of those Onan twins. All were equipped with single coil which had dual secondary output nipples. If I were to guess, your motor was originally equipped with a dual output coil. When the original coil went bad someone tried to "band-aid" it by substituting two standard coils. The rest of the ignition system (points, condensor, etc) is insufficient to fire both coils at once.

Suggest you check on what coil was originally spec'd for your motor, and if it's an Onan dual coil you have found your problem. (And if you need a new coil, bring your checkbook - seems to me they run $80 or so...)
