Can anyone recommend a good air-compressor? One
large enough to run air-tools well.

Thanks!

I have sprayed paint for many years with good and bad results The brand is not that important. You should get a compressor with a large tank 60 gal or so for cooler air, less water in the air. after the tank run the air through 20 feet or more of 1 inch copper pipe, then to your water filter and regulator, again cool air. If I had a choice I would rather have a large tank with a small motor than the other way around. For motors a 2 horse should be fine. Make surs it is a true 2 horse and not develops 2 horses or peak at 2 horse. A 2 horse motor should draw about 20 amps at 110 or 10 amps at 220 go 220 if you can. A true 5 horse motor must be run of 220 for it will draw form 35 to 40 amps.

Good luck and any other questions e-mail me at roseguy@carrinter.net bye paul

The other posts are correct. Buy as much as you can afford -HOWEVER- decide what you want to do with it. I am a weekend mechanic, however, I have not used mine for sandblasting or spray painting, and I do not have a large electrical service in my barn.

therefore, I bought a small 12 gallon oiless compressor. It serves me well. I have under $200 in it and I have run impacts, drills, chisels, air nailers, nibblers, ratchets, and the whole run of air tools. I doubt, however, that other than a small touch up sprayer, I could do much painting, but then again, I don't intend to.

The neighbor has a large compressor of the types mentioned in the other posts, and he still rents a portable job when he sand blasts a tractor. Others have said on the boards that sand blasting is very demanding and that other than small parts, you may want to rent one.

I am very satisfied with mine, I can roll it around (I have taken it into the house to run finish nailers) or use it outside.

Guess the choice is yours- figure out what you want it to do, how much you can afford, what electricity you have, and then start shopping.

Hope this doesn't confuse things.

You need to consider several factors before buying. Do you want a portable unit or a stationary one? Do you have access to 220-volt power, or will you need to operate on 110? What kind of air tools will you use? A 3/8th-inch butterfly impact wrench will demand much less than an HVLP sprayer or a high-speed disc sander or sandblaster. Within the limitations of portability and voltage, the best idea is to buy as big as you can afford, or even a little bigger. Though more expensive, a two-stage unit is better. Air compressors have gotten progressively cheaper in the last few years. Five-horse, 60-gallon units that used to sell for $500+ are now routinely on sale for less than $400. There are a lot of good brands available at reasonable prices -- Campbell Hausfeld, DeVilbiss, Sanborn, Quincy to name a few. Any will do the job for you in a non-commercial application. E-mail me if you want to chat further.

Tom: I have had two compressors the first was a sears Two stage 30 gal. tank 110/220 voltage worked good but was using a sandblaster with it it could just keep up, the second was a used Gardener/Denver, 100 gal tank, 5 horse industrial motor GOOD the point I'm making is get more than your pocket can afford because you will want it. Another thing you will find having a two stage compressor will give cooler air which will give you dryer air because moister will be your biggest enemy using air tools or painting, the reason is the longer the compressor runs the hotter it gets the hotter the air the more moister is created when the air cools. I've been there done that. Hope this helps in your search.
