Garden Tractor Questions

Hi, I've been looking into buying a garden tractor. I like the Ariens Grand Sierra. It has loader and a backhoe attachment. Other tractors in this range only have the loader. I've also seen other attachments, like post-hole diggers, chippers, and log splitters that run off the PTO. Can the Ariens use these items? I'm also looking at the JD425. Do either of these tractors have a 3 point hitch? Is the rear PTO a shaft or hose hook-up? Looking for info and advice... Thanks.

If your thinking of buying a lot of attachments, I would consider a small compact tractor. The compact has a standard pto & 3 point hitch. This means you can buy attachments from many manufactures , not just from the company that made the tractor. In the future when your tractor needs replacing the attachments will fit on your new tractor or if you want to get rid of an attachment there will be more of a market for it.

Yea, I thought about it, but I think a compact would be too big, and a little out of the old price range.
Thanks for your response.

Doug, I have used a small backhoe attachment on a 20 hp Wheelhorse. If you intend to do any amount of digging, the small outfit is too light to do you much good. Unless you have very soft ground and all kinds of time.

I agree with Len, get a tractor that uses standard equipment. Don't think of a tractor as a liability or an expense. Think of it as an investment. Buy a good used one. I have never lost money on a tractor. If you take good care of em you can sell em for more than you paid after using them for years. What's going to cost you more, buying something cheap that doesn't do the job and you can't get your money out of or spending more and buying something that does the job that you can always get your money out of? I think you know the answer. Buy the good one!
