We have a dealer here in the county that always has a couple of old tractors in his front yard with for sale signs on them. I've looked at a couple of them but am a bit wary about their actual condition because of the paint and the method of application. They are always painted very heavily and everything is covered, spark plug wires, radiator hoses and clamps, distributor cap, I mean everything on the engine and frame are painted the same color silver/grey. It looks as if they are pressure washed with the sheet metal removed then everything is dipped in a large vat of paint. The sheet metal is done in a different color (depending on the tractor make) and then replaced. They look nice and sound nice but you can't really tell what has been covered up till you run them for a while and then it's too late. Just like buying a used car, they clean and detail the engine compartment so well you think it must be brand new even though it has 143000 miles on it. Will this heavy application of paint cause any damage or is it actually good?

An old bayman friend of mine, now departed, used to say this about selling a boat, "A little putty,a little paint, makes them look like what they ain't"

It won't hurt anything but it looks like shit. The only way to paint a tractor right is to remove all of the old paint, grease, rust and scale.
