I would like to paint some tractors and equipment. I have a 5hp Worthington compressor. I would like to keep overspray down in my shop and heard HVLP guns are better for this. Are their any drawbacks to these guns? Should I get a gravity feed or the syphon type? I am a beginner at painting and would appreciate any help. I'm not painting cars here just farm equipment so I don't need to be super fussy. Can anyone recommend a brand of gun? Do I need a paint booth to paint in my shop? Help!!!!! !

I have tried about 5 different hvlp paint guns. I have decided that my favorite is a gravity fed unit that I bought from Mac Tools for about $140.00 including a gun mounted regulator. Very little over spray and will pay for itself in paint savings some say saves half but at least 30%. As for paint booth the EPA says you must have a paint booth with proper emission controls. VERY EXPENSIVE. We all know that everybody has one.

Last year I bought a HVLP pressurized spray gun made by Apollo. I use a 6.5 HP compressor, but I think a 5 HP would work too. I am also setting up a paint booth in my shop. My main concern is having a place that I can heat for painting in the winter. A paint booth allows me to control the environment that I paint in. I am satisfied with my paint gun , but would like to try a small gravity fed gun for touch-up painting. I have noticed HVLP guns are more widely available now than they were just one year ago.
