My grandfather told me that John Deere company was originally owed by VanBrunts.
Does anyone here have any info on that? Is it true?

I think your Grandfather was a little mistaken. Deere and Co. bought out Van Brunt in August of 1910. It is true however that Van Brunt had been selling their drills direct to John Deere dealers prior to the buyout. I got these facts from the book "John Deere's Company".

Daniel C. Van Brunt and George W. Van Brunt invented a grain seeder and established their factory in Horicon, Wisc. in 1861. Eventially John Deere bought them out. I have a copy of the book "The History of the John Deere Horicon Works 1861-1986", that I got from them a couple of years ago. Daniel C and George W. were great-great uncles of mine.

We have a 1954 John Deere VanBrunt grain drill. My father purchased it new for $800. This is a great drill and we use it to drill wheat, milo, and soybeans.
There are many of these units still in use.
Good luck on your family research.

I am "recycling" several abandoned vanbrunt grain drills into one useable one for seeding alfalfa. Is there some way to determine what year a particular machine was built? Some have JD foundry marks, some don't.

Any help would be appreciated.
Curious in Saskatchewan.
