I have a caroni 5 ft mower deck 3 point hitch, I am trying to put a new pto drive shaft on it and my problem is the cover over the drive shaft, how do I slide it back from the universal joint so I can connect the universal joint to the mower.

I am not familiar with the mower deck you mentioned so I am talking in general. The pto shield tube usually has some type of a locking ring that slides around in a groove on the universal joint. The newer ones were plastic with a plastic tube, older ones had metal tubes with plastic locking friction rings and a metal washer to hold them in place. Some I have worked with had metal tabs that were bent down to hold the rings in place. Some of the plastic ones I have worked with had a plastic lock and friction ring that you pryed the end up through a slot in the outside of the tube and then pulled it out through the slot. I reread your post. I may be talking about different pto tubes. You are talking about shields that cover the shaft and the u-joint completly that I have not worked with.
