Just looking for some info on an ultimate woods tractor. My grand fathers Fergeson TO 20 has been doing the job for the last 50 years. My concern is that we must haul wood down a steep hill, and I think old Fergy is getting over revved. I thought a tractor with more horsepower would provide more compression braking, possibly a diesel. Plus power steering and live PTO would be nice. I want to put Fergy into semi-retirement; but maybe I just cant replace her. Any insight is appreciated.

I agree that I'd rather use my Percherons to log with, but if I wasn't crazy about horses,( an obvious flaw in character), I'd use my JD 40 crawler. A 420/1010/350 or something that size would work great too. But you NEED a winch, and that is more expensive than oats!

I hate to sound like a nit-picker, but I don't think you get much engine braking with a diesel. That's why the big rigs use jake-brakes. When we moved off the farm 30 years ago, none of our tractors were diesel, so there may be something I don't know about.

About 5 years ago my cousin had a few big old black walnut trees cut out of her woods, they skidded them out with a team of Belgians, it was fun to watch them work!

Thanks old Clem but I work at a feed mill and I know horse feed is more expensive than gas! Ha Ha

Hey old Clem. I actually have a picture of my great grandparents bringing a load of hay down the hill with horses and the wagon wheels are chained.

I agree the ideal woods tractor should be a crawler but IMHO the D9 is too big! ray
