I recently tried to buy a generator from a catalog they said I wouldn't get it till after the year 2000. I went to the local store and I had the same problem. One day I called campbell hausfeld because of a air compressor problem and got on the subject of generators. I quickly learned that I could buy one directly from them.
They even found me one better than the one I was going to buy before and cheaper.YOu have to ask them for the updates they get which tells them what they have available. Some r factory refurbished, which is a hell of a deal. THey will sell them to you before the dealers even know about them. I got a 5500 watt, 6000 surge, generator,10hp,7gal tank. for $649 shipping included! and it will be here in 10 days or less.
I'm not sure if other companies do this but it's better than waiting and paying to much.

That seems like a pretty good price from what I've seen. Our local Quality Farm & Fleet sold a shipment of 20 generators in one weekend. They aint gonna any get any cheaper this year.

That's what I hear, about generators selling out. Not around here in southern MN, where we have to prepare for blizzards & such anyhow. Seems others are going a little nutz over the y2k stuff, or else they never were properly prepared for regular power difficulties?

Anyhow, all the farm stores seem well stocked with generator sets around here.
