In response to the statement that most cast iron rods are similar with only different exotic names to differentiate and justify pricing, I have to take issue. I am new to the world of welding, but my job as a manufacturers rep, does give me the opportunity to spend time with people with decades of experience. It is for this reason I am able to say with some degree of credibility, all cast rods are definantly not the same. Some are much better at doing the job than others, and with a cast iron electrode, you most certanily get what you pay for. No cast iron electrode is inexpensive, but make no mistake many are cheap. The bottom line is you get what you pay for. Thanks for your ear.

Maybe you have your heart set on a certain brande, but from my experience some of the repair welding companies,[ Certanium comes to mind] charge you a high price and put an exotic super
duper name on it when it is nothing more than a conventional rod from one of the major suppliers.
They do this with hardfacing espiecally. Cast iron rods cost according to their nickel content so if you can compare the content you can compare price. Welco is a popular brande offering from
50-99% nickel. The higher the nickel the less problems with cracking you have, easily machineable.
If you are not concerned with machineability you could use a lesser % of nickel. Lincoln is descent also and these Co. will sell by pound or two.

There is a vast difference between generic cast rods (55 to 99% nickels) and the specialty types.Anyone who has used them can tell you. they are designed with ease of use in mind and limited pre-heat

I should visit Tool Talk more often, I use that Cronaton, Castweld 211 at the salvage yard where I work, I've welded a ka-zillion engine blocks with that stuff, it works great but cost like hell and I think the Min. order is around $300.00 bucks. If you need there #, I'll look in there catalog tonight when I get home from work, let me know.

later,dave
