Distortion when welding

I need to weld some metal plate to strap iron to fabricate a grinding wheel guard. The plate is about 3/16 and the strap 1/8. I have a gas set up and a/c arc. Which would give the least distortion? My thought is the arc (unless you could heat the whole assemby before welding). The related question is wheter you get less distortion with a deep penetrating electrode (6011) vs a surface electrode (6013). Thoughts, comments, suggestions? (Help?)

I would use1/16th 60 series rod at about 35 amps. Any welding supply should be able to fix you up

6013 with just enough power to get an arc and weld in small, very small runs. May not be so pretty, but any more heat than absolutely necessary will warp that material.

MIG would be even better, but my next choice would be stick, 6011.
Position the part after tacking so that all your welds can be made
starting from the top and welding vertical down, this makes a nice
bead and offers the least penetration. Try to go as quick as possible
while still fusing both edges. Down hill should be limited to 1/8"
material thickness as rule of thumb but their are exceptions.

to lessen distortion Clamp clamp and clamp Tack tack and tack. I use 7014 or 7018 7014 flows very easy.
