I saw a 3 cylinder Detroit engine sold for $500 at an auction the other day, it ran, had a tranny and radiator etc. and after the auction I thought that it would have been nice to have in a '63 truck. Would it be enough engine for the Ford? I don't know much about diesel conversions and would like some input. I'm sure it would have better milage than the 292, but what about power, torque, etc?

What a conversion ! I actually saw such a conversion. Boy talk about a head turner at the red light trying to find out where the Detroit was. Talked to the guy in length and here's the down side. The engine is weak on power and to compensate you have to keep it rev'd high to make any power. top speed about 55 to 60 with a low speed rear end. Guy was going to put in an over drive to improve top end but believe it would be not cost effective. Fuel ecconomy was decent but what isn't at 50 mph? The guy had a shortened dually axle under it with no fender flares.Believe it was in a 78 Chevy. Best conversion is to put in a 3208 Cat with an allisson 5 speed auto trans. Will fit and out pull any pickup ever made.
Regards, Diesel Dan (fuel pump man)

>I believe that engine would be to small for one. It would not give enough HP or torque to push the truck very fast. The fuel comsumption would eat through your wallet faster than you could fill it. Last but not least, you would have to do so much modification to the truck that it wouldn't be worth your while. Good luck, Kevin

Kevin,
I have also been interested in a Detroit Diesel conversion on a fullsise GM truck. I saw an '83 Chev Crew Cab 4X4 a few years ago that had a 453-T Detroit in it. The owner did the conversion back in the mid 80's because he wanted a strong turbo diesel in his truck. He claims it has plenty of power (he was pulling a huge camping trailer) and gets good mieage (25 mpg). He really liked it and claimed he had 300,000 miles on the motor with the only repairs being injector pumps. The 4 cylinder fit into the engine compartment very well. Of course custom motor mounts & such were made but from talking with the owner of this truck and some of the research I have done, a bell housing out of a late 70's - early 80's C-60 or C-70 that had a Detroit will mate the engine to the SM465 four speed in GM pickups (same trannies were used in both). I have been interested in this conversion for a couple of years and would like to try it someday.
