I,m restoring a IH 140 Hi-Clearance for use on our nursery. This is a working tractor and I'm interest in getting a good durable paint job. Any tips on getting in all those nooks & crannies? Would a wire wheel leave to many marks? How about surface prep before priming? I've had problems with the paint chipping in the past.

I have restored many john deere tractors and the best thing that i have found to use in removing all of the old paint, primer, grease, etc.,is a heavy duty oven cleaner. I soak them with five or six cans and let them sit for about one week. after that i use a very strong pressure washer to remove it. After two, maybe three applications of this type of treatment almost every bit of the paint has been removed. Whatever does not come off i use a wire brush to remove the rest. I do not do this to my sheet metal it recieves a little more tender loving care. If you have any questions e mail me.

A wire wheel will not restore you're tractor. This is something of an amatuerish attack to the paint job and will most certainly leave noticeable scratches. If you are truly interested in restoring the unit, you will no doubt need to sandblast the unit to rid it from the previous coats of paint that are chipping. The chipping is sometimes caused by failing to scuff the old paint surfaces. This needs to be done to assure good adhesion of the new undercoats. Too much paint buildup also leads to excessive chipping, but there are other causes. If you are set on doing this deed yourself, consult your local paint jobber for the materials required. It's always good to stick with one paint system. Of coarse anyone can paint a tractor. The real question is how good is good enough for you?
If you want to do a quick job of it, steam clean the unit to remove grease and grime. Then wash it with Tide & warm water to remove other residues. Prime the bare areas after using sandpaper to feather-edge any damaged paint areas, then use a scotchbrite pad to scuff all the surfaces to be refinished, then shoot it (with paint).
Good luck!

Shane i would glass bead or use fine sand to clean the metal. As for the paint you might find it easier to talk to a aftermarket auto paint supplier in your area. That way you could ask and get the correct answer right away,as for the chip problem.
