I've seen advertisements for Torque Sticks in tool catalogs. They just look like extension bars with a socket attached. Apparently they're made to use with impact wrenchs. How do they work?

Torque sticks should not be used at any time! It is nearly impossible to correctly torque a fastener using a percussive tool such as an impact. According to the instructions supplied with the sticks, the impact wrench is supposed to be calibrated to insure correct torque with the sticks (and who ever checks the calibration of their impact?) If you are running a professional repair shop and using torque sticks you are opening yourself up to lawsuits if you do not calibrate and keep a log of your impact equipment. Throw them away and buy a good torque wrench.

The length and thickness of the tool is designed to the correct torque, it flexes enough to prevent overtightening, we use them at our shop everyday with no problems, when the first guy bought some we were skeptical and checked them with a torque wrench, they were all pretty dang close, now we all use and trust them. I use them on my own vehicles.

Torque sticks are not as precise as a torque wrence and, as stated, should be used with a calibrated impact. But torque wrenches require periodic calibration, too. And how many of us actually do that?

What is important is that all the lugs are torqued to the same value--even it that torgue is a few pounds from the spec.

back home and retorque the lugs, my thought
is don't waste your money!
