Am getting ready to start my sons tool collection. He loves working on the tractors, more so than helping mom fix the toilet. What would be your in your basic tool box???

Be sure and include the tractor to work on. A wise chinese proverb once said: Boy with no tractor have no need for tools. Boy with tractor need to learn how to use tools.

I adjust & repair the combine (over & over it seems) with a hammer, 8" or 10" Cresent wrench, Vice Grips, needle nose pliers, set of cheap open/box wrenches 1/2 - 1", 2 screwdrivers, and a punch in the cab;

And at home, a torch, socket set (1/2"), a bigger hammer, pry bars, and assorted types of punches and a wheel puller (mostly for removing bearings).

It's rare that I ever look for anything else. Oh, the welder, but I don't use it much.

I.H. use fence pliers right?But really back to the question,depending on if you are going to use his tools or not,i would buy a cheap set of hand wrenches,(benchtop at k-mart)hammer and craftsman screwdrivers(till he learns not to use them as a punch/prybar)always need good screwdrivers.When you see that he hasnt lost any then you can step up in quality of the tools.I remember along time ago my dad bought me a cheap set of hand wrenches and proceeded to bend the 1" around in a rainbow,after that no longer did i let him use my tools.

A set of combination wrenches (box/open) from 1/4 to 1" by 16ths. Likewise metric, 8mm to 30mm or so.
A set of 1/2" drive sockets, 6 point, regular and deep.
A set of screwdrivers
A pair of visegrips
A couple of adjustable (Crescent) wrenches
A selection of punches, drift and center, in various sizes.
A ball-pein hammer.

This is just what occurs to me off the top of my head. There's probably more if you think about it for a bit. Personally, I'd get the best wrenches I could afford. Just my opinion, but I'd consider Craftsman to be the minimum acceptable.

Paul, if the tools are for the tractors most of us have, metric wrenches would never get used except on those rusty nuts that are too loose on the standard wrenches. Not trying to be argumentive.

I was working from the idea that most utility-sized tractors are Japanese in origin. My 1988 John Deere 750 compact utility is actually a Yanmar, and is all metric. I'm pretty sure most Fords and CaseIH would be the same.

If we're talking about JD's/IH/Ford etc from pre 1960, you're right, of course.

I think Paul is right on. One thing I would add-and it runs counter to Paul's Craftsman comment- is a set of 3/4" drive sockets. These are usually mega bucks, so generally the weekender can't afford them, but Harbor Freight (www.Harbor Freight.com) has a set for $40 that is acceptable for the occaisional lug nut and large work. I would definitely consider one of these.

Good point. Most of the other tools will get used a lot, and should be good quality. 3/4 drives will spend most of their lives sitting in the tool box, so economy tools would be fine. My "set" is a conglomeration of stuff I've picked up at yard sales and flea markets. I don't think I have two 3/4 drive sockets from the same manufacturer!
