I used my auto-darkening welding helmet the other day and it really is a good help for me.
I moved into the world of bi-focal glasses a couple years ago and finding the right spot to look through became a problem when flipping a welding helmet and looking for the light of the arc and hoping you were welding close to where you wanted to be. It is amazing the way these lenses work.

Wayne, I take my glasses off when using my auto helmet. Equiped it with one of those magnifying lenses. Try one, think you'll like it. They come in different powers.

John, I am brand X - nearsighted so actually from right in front of my face out to 12-18 inches I see ok without any glasses so I do weld without glasses. The problem was when I flipped the helmet to strike the arc and lost where I was looking but now with the new helmet I just get right down close and strike the arc. I can't see far away without my glasses so I get in trouble when I chip slag because I don't have any glasses on and flying slag is tough on eyeballs. If I stand back I can't see what I am doing. I think I am going to try some clear safety glasses and get close up. Thanks.

I went out and got a full face shield for face and eye protection, cost me five bucks at Harbor Freight. Works great for woodworking, don't see why it wouldn't work for chipping slag.
