Has anyone tried one of the electric, "pencil-sharpener" type drill bit sharpeners? Like the Drill Doctor? Are they any good? I sharpen them by eye on a bench grinder now, but I'm only fair at it.

I've been sharpening drill bits for 25 years and the best sharpener I've used is a Black Diamond. This machine is extremly expensive and is not for the back yard machinist. I don't care for the plastic sharpeners as they wear out too fast. I would recommend purchasing a bench grinder that has a sharpener attachment. These are the most accurate for most applications. They use a "positive stop" that maintains symetrical flute lengths and angles. For those larger bits a beltsander works well.

THE SECRET TO SHARPENING BITS IS TO TWIST AND DROP

What is "twist & drop?"
I'm sure it's takes a kind of touch, but can you explain more?

you put the drill to the grinding stone and you start sharpening at the cutting edge, you twist the drill to sharpen it like everybody does but at the same time you twist the drill you also drop the shank or the hand that holds the drill slowly that gives you the clearance that yo need so the cutting edge doesn't drag on the metal but cuts it
i am not to good at explaining it but hopes it helps

I have been looking for a web site on sharpening drill bits myself, I just don't have the nack! Was going to purchase a 750 Drill Doctor, are they as good as everybody says? I like the thoughts of been able to go all the way up to 3\4" and 2 different angles.
Thanks for any help I can get on this

That's how Grandpa taught me, I can make them better than dull, but not as good as new. The bigger bits turn out pretty good, but not the little ones, maybe time for new glasses!

Don't know about those. In the shop here at school we have a Black & Decker #4300 Drill Bit Sharpener we bought several years ago. Kinda pricey, but puts the end of a drill in like-new condition if you follow the instructions.

Well wild bill, looks like I'm by myself. Bought one of the 3/4" drill doctors last spring and it does a great job. Have to dull a bit a little just to drill brass! Guess I wasn't very good sharpening by eye before. Read about it for yourself at: Link

I have one. I don't use it to sharpen my bits. That tells you what I think of them.

I've seen 'em, tried at a friends place. I wasn't particularly impressed. It's another one of them "one tool does it all" things that does a mediocre job.

My opinion: You'd be better to spend your money on a jig for your bench grinder that holds the drill at the proper angle.

Looking for a jig for my bench grinder that holds the drill at the proper angle for sharpening. Sears has one in their catalog but I'd like to actually "see" one before I buy it. Any suggestions as to who might have one?
