Have an old Bridgeport milling machine (round ram type) in my home shop. Thinking about spending some of the kids inheritance and buying one of those digital readouts for it. Saw one in Home Shop Machinest magazine for 500 to 700 dollar range. Any body know anything about this brand or have any comments on these things?....thanks.

John,if you haven't bought one yet,i suggest calling J & L industrial supply. They have Mitutoyo brand DRO'S on sale from time to time with a quill readout for 899$ They are a good brand name to use!

DRO'S ARE A WONDERFUL THING, BUT YOU STILL NEED MAKE SURE U HAVE BACKLASH IN TABLE GOING RIGHT DIRECTION WHEN MILLING. MY FIRST ACCESSORY WOULD BE A GOOD VISE & SET OF PARALLELS. YOU ALSO NEED GOOD SET HAND TOOLS, WHAT GOOD IS DRO IF YOU DON'T GET THE HEAD TRIMMED IN PROPERLY??

John I use a vertical mill every day at work dont know how they used to run them with out readouts? yes I do slowly. We just bought a new kind of readout well the scale is diffrent it has magnetic balls insead of glass scale really nice but any kind would be nice for home! Be really carefull when installing glass scales and save the support that it comes with[shipping lock] case you ever have to remove

Good luck

Kurt

DRO you saw in "HOME SHOP MACHINEST" probrobly
was from SHOOTING STAR . They are either 2 axis
or 3 axis and use a rack and pinion encoder.
No glass scales or steel balls in a tube. Shooting Stars systems work very well and are priced so the home shop person can justify them.
Very nice people to deal with. In one of the responces the gentelman mentioned lead screw
backlash, if you use a table encoder (as above are ) you are measuring table moves and a worn
lead screw with lots of backlash will not be a problem.
Hope this helps
Don
